Calcium: The Cornerstone of Healthy Teeth and Bones

It's National Dairy Month! No better time to talk about the benefits of drinking milk! Nowadays there are so many different types of milk. From skim to whole milk, and even almond, soy and coconut milk; you have many options to take in the rich calcium found in milk. Calcium is essential in the building of strong teeth and bones.

Calcium from dairy can be found in cheese, yogurts, sour cream and whipping creams, and even ice cream.

Not only are children encouraged to get enough calcium, but its benefits are clear for older adults who are susceptible to osteoporosis.

Milk has important proteins and potassium too, as well as the all important Vitamin D.

And if you have a dairy allergy or an aversion to milk, yogurts or cheese, there are so many foods that are calcium rich too! Try chia seeds or sesame seeds, oranges, legumes, bok choy, kale, almonds, oatmeal, seaweed, tofu and even eggs! Many green leafy vegetables, like spinach, are rich in calcium too!

It's important to include a calcium-rich diet in your lifestyle. As we age, our bones become more brittle and the calcium provides the reinforcement that our joints and skeletal system needs to maintain and fortify our bones and teeth through old age.

So whether you're dairy-free, vegan or just don't like milk, there are so many ways to get your daily calcium intake and enjoy a delicious snack or meal.

Enjoy National Dairy Month and grab an ice cream cone!
